Many organizations lobby Congress, the President and federal regulators on behalf of consumers and taxpayers. By getting involved with them and donating to them, you are hiring your own advocates to counteract the legions of industry lobbyists.
Since money is the same as political speech, according to our Supreme Court, it’s crucial for you to be represented at the table as powerfully as possible, and that means investing in advocates. Yes, they will work for you whether you join or not, much like you can listen to NPR without contributing, but the more resources the groups have, the more good they can do.
